Yeah, we're doing this.

I think this is a good time to call back to this Black Princess page -

theblackprincess.thecomicseries.com/comics/313

Thus we now have two big details on the locks - they cause superpowers and they previously caused the downfall of the Harenas. There are definitely far more details to come on both of those things down the line.

As alluded to in the pre-chapter filler, this is where we go all in on Atlanta in this universe being much larger than the real thing. In retrospect I definitely would have had the comic set in a different city if doing it again, but at least this way does give some room for some more breaks from form going forward. Though I do generally try to at least kind of line things up with real life, like I tend to look up and use real street names when referencing places.

I'll let Adam be the one to go into some of the artistic choices here, since the whole space and eyes open / eyes closed thing was on him, as was the choice to throw in a younger Gaspeed. Instead lemme talk about this other guy.

Looking it's a few pages yet before he's actually named so given that and the fact he's already listed on the cast page so will go ahead and say this new gentleman's named Ian Pearce. He previously showed up in the seventh anniversary picture but didn't really give much of an idea of what the deal with him is beyond being an antagonist who'd be run into this year.

Don't want to say too much right now of course but am hoping this guy makes an impression. He's someone I kind of had a very particular set of goals in mind with writing and had quite a bit of fun with.

Should probably start by specifying that we think this is the source of non-Blue superpowers. We're pretty sure the Blue-Gene is from some other source. But all other super-powered beings had that trigger pulled when the lock in Atlanta was opened.

Went and punched up the visuals on this, since such a huge backstory detail requires something to slam it home. The earth with the shine coming from Atlanta... The Lock with the Key in it... John and Ropun in a group of non-powered people showing they were awakened.. Yeah, just looks great.

But where did these locks come from? How many are there and where? What will happen if another is opened? I know the answers to some of these but some questions I had to ask Martin about after this page was drawn. Just a LOT of stuff to be curious about. ^^

One thing I love about the lock is the coloring; Martin let it open that either the lock becomes brighter and shinier when it's "opened" or all the locks are different colors. That open one looking like that means it could go either way, and love both ideas. ^^ Also since the design for the keys are based off the Standing Stones from Skyrim, the "key" is a modified version of the Skeleton Key.
