We're not actually sure when the last time was we drew Xmarlek? Most recent we could find was in the Halloween chapter but we both felt like we'd done him more recently than that. Either way, yeah, this is definitely the first time in awhile.

Granted the AME chapter is going a little on the backburner for the time being anyway; this page is a good step forward on it and we'll be slamming on the gas with it soon enough, but they don't figure into the next chapter while we're going back to some other lingering issues. Actually funny thing about that is the other day we were totaling things up a bit and the next chapter actually has a ton of characters who are showing up for the first time in awhile, including the one I think it's been the outright longest since we've seen in either comic.

Pretty happy with this page though; actually wound up being used as the basis for doing some on-the-fly experimenting with faces, though it doesn't really show much within this page in its own right.

Related note, that haircut on Hazel probably won't stay exactly as-is next time we see him - it's supposed to look pretty clearly improvised in light of having some of it burned off earlier. Though admittedly it is kind of growing on me so it probably won't be that huge a shift, most likely just tweaking the bangs a little or something.

Three more pages left to go in this chapter. Still not quite gotten to the point I can mention the title of the next one yet though.

The main thing I think baout for this page are various little tweaks to the background. Martin and I wound up discussing necks while I was drawing it, so you'll notice Hazel's head in panel 4 fits on his neck slightly better, and the neck itself is thicker. I've also been trying to tweak how I draw shoulders, which is really apparent on Mercy. His look a lot more confidently broad and awesome-looking. Very strapping and intimidating. ^^ I dunno, little tweaks in the art go a long way.

Likewise, we've already tweaked Xmarlek's design a bit to imply this, but it's made a big clearer here. He's drawn to look more like an over-the-hill gangster looking to retire, and it's mentioned more directly that he's grooming Mercy to take over for him. His design has him older and more out-of-shape but still intimidating. I probably wound up taking some cues from The Kingpin in drawing him; especially since at one point he came out way too wide and had to be narrowed in the drawing process.

Either way, happy to see a follow up to this half of the plot; Hazel's a great character and love sort of "Business discussions" sometimes. ^^

I was very iffy on Hazel's haircut, to the point that I actually tossed it to Martin for approval, but thought it worked because it's just supposed to be a temporary fix to having his hair burned off earlier. But looking more... Yeah, Martin's right, it's kinda growing on me. Helps that it looks a lot better in color. Not a fan of those bangs, though.

..... Heh. I just realized Mercy is wearing a Dolphin's jersey. I kinda meant it to look like the Atlanta Falcons, but the Dolphins make more sense since he was introduced being from out of Atlanta. Given Grant's dad was in town for a Dolphins game, kind of a shame Mercy was too busy with work to go.

Hazel just lucky that cutting it that short didn't turn it a curtly tangle

Heh, true. This could've ended up a lot worse for him really.
