I think this is the point where I think I should toss in a disclaimer that we don't hate America. There's certainly issues with the country, but I personally feel like I'm really lucky to be born here and not at a few other places. The main thing we're mocking with the Patriot Initiative is blind, irrational jingoism, particularly when it's used as a smokescreen for genuinely immoral points of view, such as the group's simmering racism. I... Don't know why I'm even explaining this; it's really obvious, but I dunno, suddenly worried.

I think it might be because we're taking shots at the Star Spangled Banner, but funnily enough I feel ZERO remorse for that. I can get a swell of Patriotism sometimes, but we have the WORST national anthem. To the point that when I was a kid, I used to think that ALL countries just had shit national anthems. But, no. La Marseillaise is a heartfelt and beautiful number, Oh, Canada is simple and respectful, and "State Anthem of the Russian Federation" is just RIDICULOUSLY awesome despite having a comically uninventive name. .... Yeah, I just looked it up. That's what that song's called. How did they make such a badass song with such a boring title?

Part of the issue is that Star Spangled Banner is NOT meant to be sung and performed the way you hear it done 99% of the time. The song was written to be a march. Like... A military march. It's not a gospel song or a jazz song or a full orchestra piece or in any way meant to go up and down, swell, crescendo, and cater to empty vocal exercises. It's meant to have a steady, uninterrupted beat with a calm but firm vocal accompaniment. There's nothing wrong with that kind of music; I actually really can get behind men's chorus music like most marches, but you can painfully, PAINFULLY tell that the song's not meant to be played the way it normally is.

...... Wow, I must really hate this song. I can't believe I just ranted for two paragraphs on it. I think I would even take Stars And Stripes Forever over that number, and that song blasts into your face like a fucking Rick Roll.

In general I was really looking forward to doing this page; was a really fun to draw in being straight-faced but entirely ridiculous, and the spectacle gave us a lot of chances to do things we normally don't. My favorite part is all stuff Martin's done; that fucking crowd man! You can tell the stadium is full of people... I mean, look at the little blinks of light that are people taking pictures. And can you tell me and Martin both had ZERO idea how to do Fireworks until just now? I think they actually look really great. Speaking of, I naturally put in a reference to Mario RPG. I guess Sareena bought a lot of those. ^^

Of course this entire thing just reminded me a ton of the scene in Rocky 4 when Apollo fights Drago amidst an enormous, overblown patriotism fest featuring James Brown singing Livin' in America. I love how amidst Sareena's group's unimpressed reactions, Ana is channeling Drago by looking deeply confused at what's happening. Though I think my favorite might be Daryl having trouble keeping a straight face.... DeGroot clearly fighting back tears in his close-up and Paxton looking like a total psychopath were great too... In general this page has a LOT of really fun expressions that are easy to miss with how fun it is.

.... Heh. Yeah, I think I might have to go back on my statement on the Adam Young page being an early favorite for this chapter. Typing out realizing just how much I love this one. ^^

For a looooong time I was wanting to have a gigantic spectacle of the Patriot Initiative's entrance for this fight, and largely had the broad strokes of it down - the emerging from the dark lit by torchlight thing was a definite, though it was a pretty late idea to make it an electric torch just to make the whole thing extra stupid.

As for the choice of song... I actually batted around between the national anthem and America the Beautiful and ultimately went with this one just due to being the worse song and thus fitting the joke better. Really tried to make it read like the guy's really badly oversinging it, make it extra obnoxious. Of course the fireworks also help with that - I also had pretty much no idea how to do those so just kind of figured it out as I went, think it looks okay but probably room for improvement, though it'd work better in a night scene.

I didn't really intend it to be in an arena this big, but I assume they probably just got the place cheap and maybe the tickets were free or something (which also works with how even though it's largely a Patriot Initiative crowd there are those among them cheering for the Black Court). Does certainly fit with the big spectacle being made out of this, do get the idea that the Patriot Initiative is prone to being very extra. Them having new matching gear was something specifically laid out in the script pretty much in service of that, and just due to wanting a shakeup for this climax.

I actually had to edit this script pretty late in the game to add them saying the mantra. Originally it just ended on them standing there as the song concluded but decided it was important for them to get the mantra in there, especially seeing as it's what the chapter is titled after.

Could probably keep going but either way, yeah, pretty happy with this page. Now if you'll excuse me, I have animals to cross.

Heh, given how ridiculous this page is maybe that's a good thing.

This one's still a bit overblown what with the full orchestra, but it's appropriately subdued and steady. Best I could find offhand and it fits the song better.
