Okay, so being direct Tryton being a woman is a retcon, though one I tried to put in some foreshadowing for.

Gender-neutral first name and Occam never actually referred to her as a he - wrightasrayne.thecomicseries.com/comics/978/

Arc being surprised when the helmet came off - wrightasrayne.thecomicseries.com/comics/981

And additionally if you look back at the comments Adam and I haven't been referring to her with gendered pronouns.

Admittedly there is one kind of wrinkle in this from looking back at previous pages, when Arc mentions looking in Tryton's eyes; that's just kind of my screwup since I forgot about that line until just now on looking back, but I'd explain it as either she used to have a different helmet that showed slightly more of her face or Arc's kind of exaggerating out of grief. Either way, it's a screwup on my part, I'll own up to it.

There were a fair few reasons for this change, but to go into a couple of them...

First of all, I've noticed that in Wright as Rayne we haven't really had any independently-operating secondary villains that are woman, besides the brief appearance of the Impact Player; O'Hara and Power were both the big bads of arcs but McShay, Rue, Glory, Gwendolyn (okay, not actually shown up in WaR yet in her case), Lara, they're all working with other people, while the standalone villains have largely been men. I felt like Tryton was a good candidate for shaking that dynamic up.

Secondly, I feel like it makes Tryton more interesting. This sort of merciless ex-military criminal is pretty standard fare with being a man, but the trope is a lot less frequent with the inverse, and I feel like it makes the dynamic with Arc more interesting due to kind of playing with the typical perceived power dynamic; Arc's trying to avenge his wife against someone who completely outclasses him as a threat and it kind of turns it on its head taking it in this direction instead.

Either way, yeah. Tryton gets away here, but clearly intends to cause future trouble and now Alex and Mercy are more directly on her radar. It'll likely be a bit before she really factors into things again, but do have future plans for the character and of course still need to more directly see her and Arc play off of each other at some point.

That's the end of the conflict for the chapter, but still a few pages left to go. After all, Alex hasn't addressed why they actually came here yet.

Heheh..... Yeah, like Martin said, we've been specifically avoiding using pronouns to refer to Tryton, and kind glad that's over. I've even been trying to avoid gender-neutral ones like they/them since I thought that would be suspicious, and totally ducking pronouns was pretty awkward.

But yeah, like Martin said, she was originally a big pissed off mercenary man. I remember waaaaay back in the day doodling up a potential design; was like a huge scary GI Joe type, with a thick mustache and the Marine Corp symbol tattooed on his face. Personally think this one's a lot more fun. ^^

I like how mysterious she sort of looks in that 5th panel, throwing the helmet behind her as a souvineer, hair covering her face, such a great "I'll be back" shot. Those are important images for stories like this.

Either way, this was certainly a memorable way to introduce a new bad guy; having Xandy in danger immediately catches your attention and makes you eager to see her again. I'm curious if she'll have tigher or more advanced Power Armor when she pops back up, like a 2.0 model.

Additional touch I liked, not sure if anybody noticed, was the bit of blood on the side of her head in the 5th panel. It's coming out of the spot where the helmet dented; just a little touch to help put over how hard she got hit.

I was wondering what that red spot was, very interesting, wonder what's going to happen next.
