First page drawn in my new apartment! Feels really good. Like a return to normalcy after all the stress and anxiety over the move. ..... Granted still a lot of anxiety over the page being finished on time but that's because it was a photo finish; Still very pleased with the results.
We haven't seen Occam much in this comic, so him having a sudden fuck-you-amazing wrestling move on Maggi to save Alex just feels like a great way to make him stand out.
Funny thing, in the script he was supposed to be performing a Tornado DDT, but I kinda really, really struggled to draw that move. This weird klunky version is genuinely my best attempt at replicating it. Either way, still looks pretty surprising and painful.
One thing I really love about this is that most times we see Occam he's not very visible to the camera. This time we get a really good look at his tattoos. .... In particular how adorable his tiger is. Like, I wanna snuggle that tiger.
At the time of that first one we described him as a random side character we just kind of went overboard with designing, but that was deliberately being misleading. We actually had pretty substantial plans for him the whole time, just wanted him to initially turn up as completely throwaway. From here we'll be getting kind of his first proper introduction; think of those earlier appearances as kind of teasers for him.
So yeah, this was a fun one to do, despite a looot of problems kind of arising with trying to rush it together at the end. Actually were having serious doubts we'd be able to get it up finished on time but by way of dividing up some of the remaining things to do on it and then chimeraing the parts we worked on together were able to get it out on time, and wound up with a page we're very happy with. Need to do more stuff like that shadow over Maggi's face in the third panel.
This whole sequence was originally waaaaay different. A lot of stuff got changed along the way in this chapter for time and pacing reasons, and one of those was that at a point the entire thing with Maggi was going to involve her trying to kill Alex in a completely different manner with Occam swooping in to help there as part of a bigger set piece, and that was going to be more around the midpoint of the chapter, with other big things that would have happened toward the end that wound up instead being moved around. This chapter's had a lot of things going on in it anyway, being kind of an extended third act for the previous chapter, and it was sort of decided that certain things planned wound up working better not doing them right now. Of course we still have some pages left to come so...
Yeah, in either case, really hope everyone will enjoy Occam as we get more of an idea of who he is going forward. As for why exactly he happened to be in the area at this convenient time, we'll get to that.
