Heh... Yeah, this was a difficult page to do.... I really didn't want Ivy to look too sad or sympathetic; that would make it look like we're supposed to feel bad for Ivy for being a crummy mom and not her kid. But there IS more going on here than it seems; Ivy not having custody is wrapped up in her backstory, and she does wish things could be different. So I did want to make it clear that there's more to the story, and that the "more" in question isn't pretty....

Ivy's expression in particular was hard to nail in the 7th panel was the hardest bit to get right, and the entire page sort of hinges on it. I found up going to FLCL for reference; there's a scene where Naota is crying and hugging Haruko, and you only see her expression as he does it. The expression has a lot of feeling in it, and I've seen different viewers take away entirely different interpretations on what she's thinking. It's the perfect mixture of regretful and callous. Hope I nailed it.

Yeah, Ivy is a character in the comic I really love geting to work with every time she shows up. Hopefully it won't be long before she breezes in again. ^^

Yeah, this one was kind of an odd one to write. Feel like there are a lot of potential ways to read it and I can see it reflecting pretty badly on Ivy just dodging the subject like this.

There were a few different ways I thought about approaching this whole leg of the plot, though part of the choice to structure it this way did come from not wanting it to take up too much screentime. Still, I do think that this option works best going forward with what angles I want to explore their relationship from in the future. There's a lot to unpack there that we haven't really scratched the surface on yet. It makes it a fairly difficult page to talk about but in the moment it does kind of give a lot to think about.

Next page we kick off the longest one of these stories, returning the subject to Alex and Xandy. Hopefully everyone enjoys what's to come there.

Everything about Ivy's life is complicated it seems, wonder what's going to happen next.

Wow, I would never have been able to tell you didn't intend for the reader to feel bad for Ivy here, more to hate her for being so distant, but there is still a bit in these panels that convey a sense of sympathy for her AS WELL as her kid, you want both parties to be happy and are heartbroken that this cannot stand even at Christmas time.

You can imagine all sorts of things happening with Ivy's back turned in that last panel. The hope that somehow the kid's presence affected her in some ways..maybe it did, maybe it didn't, we're not privy to everything going on in Ivy's head.

Well, I did intend for Ivy to be sympathetic certainly, I was just kind of afraid that people might not necessarily take it that way, and also kind of didn't want to lay it on too thick in doing it - she's sort of supposed to be a tricky one to read and all. Glad you did get so much out of it though, this whole subject is something I do really look forward to exploring more in the future.
